Titus Livius, Ab Urbe Condita 1.57.3-5

Livy describes how, when Ardea could not be taken by direct assault, the Romans settled into a siege, and how the resulting idleness of a long war gave the officers, and especially the young men of the royal circle, ample time to spend in feasting and revelry.

si Ardea primo impetu capi posset, temptata est: cum id non processit, Romani muros fecerunt ut Rutuli in urbe remanerent.

Ut fit magis in longo bello quam in brevi bello, in his castris satis erant libertas veniendi decedendique, magis viris qui ordinem altiorem habent quam militibus.

Certe, regii iuvenes (the young royalty) tempus suum perdit inter se consumendo et bibendo nimis multum.
