Bellātor nōn exspectāvit. "dē Trōiā dīxistī," inquit. "quōmodo nōs in Trōiā vīdistī?"

 

Caecilius, territus, manūs levāvit. sed Sinistrus nōn erat territus. rīsit.

 

"iuvenēs semper tam ferōcēs sunt!" inquit. "ego iocum fēcī. nōnne iocōs Rōmānōs cognōscitis?" sed oculī Sinistrī nōn rīdēbant.

 

"nōn erat iocus," Bellātor respondit.

 

Sinistrus sē in sellā posuit. "fortasse nōn erat," inquit lentē. "sed quid, sī nōn erat? quid tum?"

 

silentium in ātriō fuit. Caecilius inter Recentiōs et Sinistrum spectābat, sīcut homō inter duōs ignēs stāns.
