Episode 12.2.b

>The Plains of Cannae, Italy, August 2nd, 216 BCE<

You keep to one side. One commander talks with a military tribune while you talk with the other. Then the first commander comes back.

"It's time," he says flatly. "I'm going to my post." He mounts and rides toward the lines.

The other commander turns to you. "At least we have the numbers," he says. "If our men drive straight at the Lapis, this business will be over. But I'll tell you the truth: Hannibal frightens me."

He mounts too, and rides after the first.

You have never seen so many soldiers in one place, and their discipline is beautiful to watch. Tribunes shout; centurions carry the orders down the lines. All that iron makes the sound an army makes in the films and games you know.

Tertius is suddenly at your side with a sword in his hand.

"They nearly killed me!" he says. "What happened? Mission Control worked out that you were in a training and sent me after you.

"We have to act. The Demiurge is still anxious, and nobody knows what dragged you here. So Mission Control wants the whole battle through your eyes. Choose a place in the Roman army and tell the battle from there. Above all, watch Hannibal. We believe he keeps the Lapis close beside him."

Prompt: Choose a station for your Recentius, and narrate the battle from your Recentius's perspective.
