Octāviāna ante Aenēam stetit. "Aenēā, audī!" inquit. "tū pugnāre vīs; intellegimus. sed cōgitā: quis post tē vīvet?"

 

Aenēās nōn respondit.

 

"pater tuus Anchīsēs senex est; vix ambulāre potest. quis eum ex urbe portābit? et Creūsa, uxor tua? et Ascanius, fīlius parvus? eōs quis servābit?"

 

Aenēās oculōs clausit.

 

"sī tū hīc perībis, Anchīsēs quoque perībit, et Creūsa, et Ascanius. nōn sōlum tū cadēs, sed omnēs quī tē amant."

 

Octāviāna paulum tacuit, deinde lēnius dīxit: "tū nōn sōlum mīles es; tū pater es. pietās tua nōn est cadere. pietās tua est servāre."

 

Aenēās Octāviānam spectāvit; lacrimae in oculīs erant. per flammās spectāvit, domum suam vidēre cupiēns.

 

tum lentē dīxit: "Anchīsēs... pater meus..."

 

Aenēās gladium dēposuit.

 

"īte mēcum. celeriter."
