P. Vergilius Maro, Aeneid 10.739–746

The dying Orodes warns Mezentius that the same fate awaits him; Mezentius laughs off the prophecy and withdraws his spear, and Orodes sinks into the sleep of death.

Orodes autem moriens: "quicumque es, victor, non me inulto nec longum laetus es: aequa fata te quoque prospectant atque mox tenebis eadem arva."

Ad quae Mezentius subridens mixta ira respondet: "Nunc morere. Sed pater divum atque rex hominum de me viderit."

Hoc dicens eduxit telum e corpore: dura quies oculos Orodi et ferreus somnus urget, oculi clauduntur in aeternam noctem.
