Titus Livius, Ab Urbe Condita 1.57.6–7

At a drinking party in the tent of Sextus Tarquinius, a boastful argument about wives prompts Collatinus to propose they ride home unannounced to judge for themselves.

Tier 1

Forte viri bibebant hic apud Sextum Tarquinium et Collatinus Tarquinius quoque cenabat, et aliquis uxorum mentionem fecit.

Viri miris modis suam uxorem laudant; deinde, excitato certamine, Collatinus negat certamen pugnandum verbis;

Collatinus dicit in horis paucis viros posse scire Lucretiam Collatini optimam uxorem esse.

Collatinus: "Quin (cur non) nos equis vehimur et invisimus uxores ut naturas uxorum nostrarum videre possimus.

Sit spectatissimum id quod nos, viri non expectati, videmus." Calidi vino;
