Titus Livius, Ab Urbe Condita 1.57.3–5

With Ardea reduced to a siege, Livy notes that the idle young men of the royal circle fill their time with feasting and revelry.

si Ardea primo impetu capi posset, temptata est: cum id non processit, Romani muros fecerunt ut Rutuli in urbe remanerent.

Ut fit magis in longo bello quam in brevi bello, in his castris satis erant libertas veniendi decedendique, magis viris qui ordinem altiorem habent quam militibus.

Certe, regii iuvenes (the young royalty) tempus suum perdit inter se consumendo et bibendo nimis multum.
