Titus Livius, Ab Urbe Condita 1.57.1–2

Livy explains that Tarquinius Superbus besieged the wealthy Rutulian city of Ardea to replenish his treasury and placate a people wearied by his tyranny and forced labor.

Rutuli Ardeam habebant, gens divitissima, ut in ea regione et in eo tempore;

eaque ipsa causa belli fuit, quod rex Romanus ipse (Lucius Tarquinius Superbus), pauper quia opera popularium nimis constant, rex Romanus et cupiebat se esse divitem et cupiebat placere animis popularium pecunia capta,

Populi non amant aliam superbiam regis, etiam indignabantur quia se habitos tam diu ab rege in officiis fabrorum (of craftsmen) et labore servorum.
