Horace opens with Jupiter unleashing storms and lightning on Rome, raising fear that the great flood of Pyrrha's age is returning.

Pater Juppiter iam misit satis dirae nivis (snow) et dirae grandinis (hail) et terruit Urbem Romam, iaculatus (striking) sacras arces rubente dextera,

Juppiter terruit omnes gentes ne grave tempus Pyrrhae, quae tristis de novis monstris, rediret, cum Proteus egit omnem gregem visere altos montes,

et genus piscium habetur summa ulmo, quae fuerat domus columbis, et timidae cervae nataverunt alta aqua.
