Gaius Valerius Catullus, Carmen 62.35-50

The male chorus praises Hesperus, noting that girls secretly desire what they publicly lament. The female chorus responds with the famous image of a flower in an enclosed garden: a virgin untouched retains her value, but once plucked, she is desired by none.

Tier 1

(pueri dicunt) custodia semper vigilat cum tu advenit, nocte fures latent.

fures, quos cum tu, Hespere, revertis, saepe comprendis, nomine mutato Eous (stella mane).

sed placet puellis carpere te ficto questu.

quid tum, si puellae carpunt te quem tacita mente requirunt? o Hymenaee Hymen, veni o Hymenaee Hymen!

(puellae dicunt) ut flos secretus crescit in hortis clausis, ignotus ovibus, tactus nullo aratro, quem aurae molliter tangunt, quem sol firmat, quem imber educat;

multi pueri illum florem optaverunt, multae puellae illum florem optaverunt:

cum puella amisit castum florem polluto corpore, puella non pueris placet, nec puella est cara suis puellis;

o Hymenaee Hymen, veni o Hymenaee Hymen!
