Gaius Valerius Catullus, Carmen 61.61-75

Catullus demonstrates that without Hymenaeus, neither Venus nor family nor nation can fully flourish — all depend on the marriage god's blessing.

sine te, Hymen, Venus non potest creare amorem quem populus bonum vocet,

 

sed Venus potest si tu vis.

 

quis audeat comparare se tecum?

 

nulla domus potest dare liberos sine te, nec parens potest dare sibi nepotes;

 

sed possunt si tu vis.

 

quis audeat comparare se tecum?

 

terra quae tuas sacras non habet non possit dare custodes finibus suis:

 

sed potest si tu vis.
