Publius Ovidius Naso, Amores 1.15.1-8

Ovid asks why Envy is coming at him for not doing the typical Roman things a man of Ovid's station would have done to advance in politics, while Ovid seeks fame through poetry.

avarus Livor, cur iacis pigros annos mihi, cur vocas carmen meum opus pigri mentis?

 

accusas me non petere praemia militiae sicut patres mei, dum non tam senex sum,

 

accusas nec me discere leges quae nimis multa verba habent, nec me prostituisse vocem meam in foro quod me non diligit.

 

opus quod tu, Livor, quaeris, est mortale. ego quaero famam immortalem ut semper canar in toto orbe.
