Publius Ovidius Naso, Amores 1.2.9-18

Ovid questions whether it is better to just give in to love and gives examples where giving in to a burden is better than resisting the burden.

cedimus? an nos inflammamus flammam pugnando? cedamus! labor leve fit, quod bene fertur.

 

ego vidi flammas crescere quia aliquis facem movit, et rursus ego vidi flammas mori cum nemo facem movit.

 

boves, qui iuga prima resistunt, ferunt plura verbera quam boves quos usus aratri delectat.

 

ferus equus nocet ori suo cum equus contra durum lupatum errat, quisquis se aptum ad arma facit sentit frena (harness) minus.

 

Amor acrius et multo ferocius urget invitos quam eos qui se esse servos accipiunt.
