P. Ovidius Naso, Metamorphoses 4.108–127

This section gives Pyramus's lament over what he has found: words of self-blame and a bitter apostrophe to the lions. Note the shift from speech back to narrative at its close.

Pyramus dīxit: "ūna nox duōs amantēs occīdet. Thisbē longā vītā dignissima erat. ego sōlus culpam habeō. ego tē iussī nocte venīre. tū vēnistī. ego nōn vēnī prior. nunc, ō leōnēs, quī sub hōc saxō habitātis, occīdite mē!"

 

vestem Thisbēs sustulit. ad arborem tulit. lacrimās et ōscula vestī dedit. tum dīxit: "accipe nunc sanguinem nostrum!" gladium quem habēbat in pectus mīsit. statim moriēns gladium ē vulnere trāxit. in terrā iacuit. sanguis altē exiit.

 

et ecce, pōma arboris colōrem mūtāvērunt. nigra facta sunt. sanguis in rādīcēs iit. ita mōra purpurea fīunt.
