Quintus Horatius Flaccus, Satirae 1.6.56-64

Horace recounts his first meeting with Maecenas, describing how he spoke haltingly out of shyness and told him plainly who he was, and how nine months later Maecenas invited him into his circle of friends, which Horace considers a great honor since Maecenas judges men not by their birth but by their character and purity of heart.

Cum primum te vidi, dixi pauca verba singultim (stuttering) – nam infans (speechless) pudor prohibebat me plura dicere –

Non ego narro me natum claro patre, non ego me narro circumvectari rura Tarentino equo, sed ego narro id quod eram.

Tu respondes pauca verba, ut tuus mos est; aberam, nono mense post, tu me revocas et me iubes in numero amicorum esse.

Ego ducebam hoc magnum, quia placui tibi, tu qui decernis inter turpem et honestum, non patre claro, sed vita et corde puro.
