C. Valerius Catullus, Carmen 64.177–187

Ariadne's speech takes stock of her situation. She runs through the possibilities open to her — the mountains of Ida, her father, her husband — and weighs each in turn.

Tier 1

"quō nunc ībō? quam spem habeō? nūllam habeō.

nōn possum ad montēs Crētae redīre. mare māgnum mē ā Crētā dīvidit.

nōn possum ad patrem redīre auxilium petītum. ego patrem reliquī. ego iuvenem secūta sum, quī frātrem meum interfēcerat.

nōn possum ā marītō auxilium petere. Thēseus iam fugit. Thēseus rēmōs in marī movet.

īnsula est sōla. nēmō hīc habitat. nūlla domus est. nūlla via patet. mare circum īnsulam est.

nūlla via fugae est. nūlla spēs est. omnia tacent. omnia dēserta sunt. omnia mortem ostendunt."
