Gaius Valerius Catullus, Carmen 62.51-61

The male chorus responds with the image of a vine: just as a vine growing alone in a bare field never thrives, but flourishes when joined to an elm, so too a woman is valued more by husband and parent alike when she is properly wed.

Tier 1

(pueri dicunt) ut sola vitis quae nascitur in vacuo arvo, numquam se tollit, numquam dulcem uvam educat,

sed deflectens corpus pondere grave iam tangit suum flagellem radice;

nulli agricola hanc vitem coluerunt, nulli boves (vel iuvenes) hanc vitem coluerunt:

sic virgo dum sine tactu manet, dum virgo inculta senescit; cum habuit maritum aequum ei maturo tempore, virgo est magis cara viro et minus invisa est parenti.

o Hymenaee Hymen, veni o Hymenaee Hymen!
