Gaius Valerius Catullus, 91 "To Gellius: Mistakes were made..."

Catullus thought his girlfriend was safe from Gellius, but apparently Catullus’ relationship with Gellius was close enough to spark Gellius’ incestual desires.

Gelli, sperabam te futurum esse fidum mihi in hoc misero meo, in hoc malo amore,

 

non quod tam bene te cognovissem neque quod putarem te constantem esse aut posse prohibere mentem tuam a malo;

 

sed quod videbam hanc puellam nec matrem tuam nec sororem tuam esse, hanc puellam cuius magnus amor me capiebat.

 

quamquam tu et ego proximi sumus,

 

non credideram proximitatem satis esse tibi.

 

sed satis est tibi: test tanta laetitia tibi in omni culpa, faciens malum tibi placet.
