Gaius Valerius Catullus, 35 "To Caecilius: Come Visit!"

Catullus tells his poem on a sheet of paper to tell Caecilius to come to Verona so they can talk, even if Caecilius’ girlfreind wants him to stay.

papyre, dic meo amico, poetae Caecilio, “veni Veronam. Abi a moenibus Novi Comi litoreque Larium.”

 

nam volo ut Caecilius accipiat paucas sententias amici sui meique.

 

itaque, si Caecilius scit id quod optimum est, Caecilius curret, quamquam puella pulchra eum retenet, manibus circum collum eius, rogans Caecilium remanere.

 

puella quae nunc, si ego recte audio, Caecilium nimis multum amat.

 

nam cum puella legit carmen ‘Dominam Dindymi,’ carmen quod imperfectum est, ex eo tempore ignes in corde misellae puellae ardebunt.

 

ignosco tibi, puella doctior quam Sapphica musa; magna mater Caecilii est venuste imperfecta.
