GRAMMATICA

 

Operatives, in Mission 8, you were introduced to Adjectives and the rules that accompany them. Adjectives, like nouns, are divided into groups (or declensions). Some adjectives follow the patterns of first and second declension nouns, while others follow the pattern of third declension nouns. We're going to be focusing on those that follow the pattern of first and second declensions, or 2-1-2 for short.

 

lentus servus in culinā coquit.

The slow slave cooks in the kitchen.

 

lenta puella nōn cucurrit ad forum.

The slow girl did not run to the forum.

 

quōmodo lentum auxilium advēnit?

How did the slow aid arrive?

 

You will notice that with nouns of different declensions, the adjective takes on the ending of that noun. A 2-1-2 adjective is able to use endings from both the first and second declensions, depending on the gender of the noun it is modifying. If the noun is feminine (like puella), the adjective will use first declension endings. If the noun is masculine or neuter (like servus or auxilium), the adjective will use the second declension endings.

You can also turn these adjectives into adverbs simply by dropping the "-us" ending and adding an "-ē."

 

servus in culinā lentē coquit.

The slave cooks slowly in the kitchen.

 

puella lentē ad forum ambulavit.

The girl walked slowly to the forum.

 

auxilium lentē advēnit.

The aid arrived slowly.

 

While adjectives are used to describe a noun, adverbs are used to describe when, where, or how and action happens.
