"The quarrel between the optimates and the populares reached its height under Marius and Sulla, did it not? And both men opened the road for the Societas Potentium. Marius and his followers, the men they called Marius's mules, won for the Roman army as much land as we now hold. And Sulla taught us the lesson we live by: it is useful to gather power into the hands of a few.
"To every one of you I give an anulus Potentium." He passes among you, and into each hand he sets a heavy signet ring. "Show this ring to any of the Potentes, and you will be safe among them.
"And now the hour has come for the final speeches. I want to hear about Cicero, and about Caesar."
