"Asina told me that if I called on the power of the Lapis and followed the consilium Asinae, I would not fail. I can't work out what he meant, but I have an idea. The Claudii and the Cornelii are forever talking about the power of the Senate, and making use of the plebs whenever it suits them. The Lapis must stand for the mos maiorum, the old Roman way. It's that story about the stone from Troy, the one Asina was carrying when he was captured. But isn't Rome better off when the patricians aren't leading the plebs into nonsense like that treaty with the Mamertines?"
Duilius looks at you. "What am I to do? I have to fight. I know nothing about war. How do I call the fleet to order? How do I lead the men into the fight? How do I win glory for Rome?"
