Tiberius leads you into the atrium, where Salvius is waiting with his arms folded and his face set sour.
"Salvius," says Tiberius, "the Recentii are the best of friends. I knew them in Pompeii, and though I marvel at finding them in Britannia, I could not be happier to meet them again."
Salvius manages the courtesy of a donkey being made to bow. His eyes do not go to your arms, where the marks are; he takes care that they do not.
"Very well," he says at last, slowly. "Tiberius has already cost me good slaves. Be guests, then, in my villa, Recentii." He says nothing more.
Tiberius hurries you off to a bedroom before Salvius can reconsider. There he pulls a scroll from his bag and unrolls it across the bed, all eagerness. It is a map: a coastline, a harbor, a river, and at some distance from the river three angled shapes, like mountains made by hand. There is writing on it, Greek and Latin together.
Tiberius sets his finger on one spot. "Look! The Odyssey, book fourteen! Salvius must have that book in his study."
