P. Cornelius Tacitus, Agricola 2

Tacitus recalls the reign of Domitian (81-96 CE). Two biographers, Arulenus Rusticus and Herennius Senecio, were put to death for praising Thrasea Paetus and Helvidius Priscus, their books were burned, and the philosophers were expelled from Rome.

Tier 1

nōs rem saevam legimus. Rūsticus et Senecio librōs scrīpsērunt. in librīs virōs bonōs laudāvērunt: Rūsticus Thraseam laudāvit, et Senecio Helvidium. propter hoc prīnceps Rūsticum et Seneciōnem necāvit. sed librōs quoque eōrum dēlēvit: librī clārōrum virōrum in forō ārsērunt.

prīnceps et amīcī eius putābant: 'hic ignis vōcem populī Rōmānī dēlet. hic ignis lībertātem senātūs dēlet. hic ignis memoriam omnium hominum dēlet.' sed frūstrā hoc putābant. philosophōs quoque ē Rōmā expulērunt, et omnēs bonās artēs in exilium mīsērunt. nūllam enim rem honestam vidēre volēbant.

nōs magnam patientiam ostendimus. antīquī Rōmānī nimiam lībertātem vīdērunt. nōs nimiam servitūtem vīdimus. hominēs nihil dīcere audēbant, quod ubīque erant malī hominēs quī omnia audiēbant et prīncipī nārrābant.

nōs tacēre poterāmus, sed oblīvīscī nōn poterāmus. itaque vōcem perdidimus, sed memoriam nōn perdidimus.
