C. Plinius Caecilius Secundus, Epistulae 10.5

Plīnius, while serving as governor of Bithynia-Pontus, writes to the emperor Trāiānus with two requests on behalf of others. He asks for the grant of Roman citizenship for his physician and for two freedwomen of a noblewoman named Antōnia Maximilla.

proximō annō, domine, gravī morbō labōrāvī. paene mortem vīdī. tum medicum sūmpsī. ille mē cūrāvit et servāvit. nunc grātiāsagere cupiō. sed sōlus satis facere nōn possum. itaque tē rogō.

eī, domine, cīvitātem Rōmānam. ipse enim līber est, sed cīvis Rōmānus nōn est. fēmina enim quae eum līberāvit cīvis Rōmāna nōn erat. nōmen eius medicī Arpocrās est. nōmen fēminae illīus Thermūthis Theōnis erat. illa iam diū mortua est.

item aliud rogō. Antōnia Maximilla, fēmina nōbilis, hoc quoque ā mē rogāvit. itaque prōpetō. duae fēminae sunt quās ipsa līberāvit: Hedia et Antōnia Harmeris. igitur, domine, etiam hīs duābus iūs cīvium Rōmānōrum.
