Titus Livius, Ab Urbe Condita [2.10.7-10]

Cocles was joined by two men to hold off the attack while the bridge is destroyed. When the bridge is almost destroyed, he sends the other two men back and challenges the enemies to one on one combat.

pudor duos viros cum Horatio tenuit, ambos famosos familia et factis suis.

 

Horatius cum his duobus sustinuit primam tempestatem et partem pugnae quae pessima erat;

 

deinde Larcinus et Herminius revocati a quibus pontem frangebant, in tutum iverunt nam tantum parva pars pontis relicta est;

 

deinde Horatius saevis oculis minaciter spectabat Etruscos et provocabat singulos et omnes clamabat:

 

"servi estis regum arrogantium, immemores tuae libertatis, venitis oppugnatum libertatem alienam."

 

Etrusci haesitaverunt dum alius alium circumspectat ut proelium incipiant;

 

deinde pudor lineam Etruscorum movit, et clamore omnes Etrusci in unum hostem tela iaciunt.

 

Horatius omnia tela scuto capit, neque minus obstinatus, pontem tenet.

 

Etrusci temptabant Horatium expellere impetu, cum et fragor rupti pontis et clamor Romanorum sustinuit impetum subito metu.
