C. Valerius Catullus, Carmen 66.29–38

The lock goes on addressing Berenice. The passage concerns the vow she made to the gods when her husband left, and the gift that paid it.

Tier 1

tum maesta virum tuum dīmīsistī. quae verba tum dīxistī! Juppiter! saepe oculōs manū trīstī tetigistī.

quī deus tantus tē mūtāvit? forsitan amantēs ā corpore cārō nōn longē esse volunt.

tum tū deīs omnibus mē prōmīsistī. prō coniuge dulcī prōmīsistī. sanguinem bovis quoque prōmīsistī.

condiciō erat haec: coniūnx tuus redībit. nōn post tempus longum rēx Asiam cēpit. Asia fīnibus Aegyptī addita est.

ego caelestibus deīs reddita sum. prō hīs factīs vōta antīqua mūnere novō solvō.
