P. Vergilius Maro, Aeneid 1.1–11

Vergil opens his epic by announcing his subject: the wanderings and sufferings of Aeneas, a Trojan hero driven by the wrath of Juno across land and sea before he can found a new home in Italy.

 

Tier 1

ego canō dē armīs et dē virō. hic vir erat Aenēās. Aenēās Trōiānus erat. Trōia dēlēta est. Aenēās ā Trōiā nāvigāvit et vēnit prīmus ad Ītaliam.

 

iter eius difficile erat. deī eum in terrīs et in marī vexāvērunt.

 

Iūnō, rēgīna deōrum, īrātissima erat. Iūnō Aenēam nōn amābat. Aenēās multa in bellō passus est.

 

tandem urbem condidit et deōs suōs in Latium portāvit. ex Aenēā genus Latīnum vēnit. patrēs Albānī ex eō genere vēnērunt. tandem Rōma condita est, urbs alta.

 

Mūsa, dīc mihi: cūr Iūnō, rēgīna deōrum, virum pium multīs labōribus vexāvit? cūr tanta īra erat in animīs deōrum?
